Collocations as Cues to Semantic Orientation

چکیده
Techniques to classify opinion or sentiment in text as either positive or negative employ features such as individual words, bigrams, and part-of-speech patterns. When individual words and bigrams are employed, both the frequency of their presence and their predetermined probable polarity are used to decide the polarity of the text to be classified; neutral words and bigrams are not useful in this task. We refer to words that provide polarity cues as nuance-bearing. Joanna Channell (2000) claims that through the systematic manual examination of corpus data, properties of evaluative expressions that cannot be intuitively understood can be assigned. Specifically she looks at concordances and identifies expressions or collocations in which the words individually do not carry evaluative nuance but which collectively are predominantly used in a positive or negative connotation. She provides examples to illustrate her theory:

The Effects of Task Orientation and Involvement Load on Learning Collocations
This study examined the effects of input-oriented and output-oriented tasks with different involvement load indices on Iranian EFL learners' comprehension and production of lexical collocations. To achieve this purpose, a sample of 180 intermediate-level EFL learners (both male and female) participated in the study. The participants were in six experimental groups. Each of the groups was random...
متن کاملUsing Multiple Knowledge Sources for Word Sense Discrimination
This paper addresses the problem of how to identify the intended meaning of individual words in unrestricted texts, without necessarily having access to complete representations of sentences. To discriminate senses, an understander can consider a diversity of information, including syntactic tags, word frequencies, collocations, semantic context, role-related expectations, and syntactic restric...
متن کاملSemantic Prosody: Its Knowledge and Appropriate Selection of Equivalents
In translation, choosing appropriate equivalent is essential to convey the right message from source-text to target-text, and one of the issues that may have a determinative role in appropriate equivalent choice is the semantic prosody (SP) behavior of words and the relation existing between the SP of a word and semantic senses (i.e. negativity, positivity or neutrality) of its collocations in ...

متن کاملSupervised Learning Algorithms Evaluation on Recognizing Semantic Types of Spanish Verb-Noun Collocations
The meaning of such verb-noun collocations as the wind blows, time flies, the day passes by can be generalized as ‘what is designated by the noun exists’. Likewise, the meaning of make a decision, provide support, write a letter can be generalized as ‘make what is designated by the noun’. These generalizations represent the meaning of certain groups of collocations and may be used as semantic a...
